Caritas Fund Raising Campaign appeal from Cardinal Tong

The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Contagion of Love

From the beginning of this year, we have faced the unprecedented and unpredictable Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the whole world has been hit hard by the virus. Hong Kong’s economic environment, social activities and people’s livelihoods have been adversely affected. The poor, the elderly and the weak are the first to bear the brunt and the ones who suffer most. We cannot yet see the end to the daily routine of wearing of masks, the frequent washing of hands, maintaining social distancing and avoiding going out.

At this moment, how to live with this adversity with ease is a lesson that we have to learn. Pope Francis pointed out in the preface for the new book, Communion and Hope: “The risk of contagion from a virus should teach us how the ‘contagion’ of love passes from one heart to another.” Although the pandemic is ruthless, the selfless dedication and cooperation of medical and teaching staff, social workers and people from different sectors shows us the light in the dark. This is the hope and strength that love brings.

The annual Caritas Fund Raising Campaign is a good opportunity to bring together service groups, parishes, schools and the general public to demonstrate the strength of unity. Donations raised this year will not only enable Caritas-Hong Kong to maintain its high quality services, but will also help it to handle the protracted fight against the pandemic and help the disadvantaged tide over these difficult times.

As Pope Francis said in a prayer last year: “Help us to show creative solidarity in addressing the consequences of this global pandemic. Make us courageous to embrace the changes that are needed in search of the common good.”

St. Paul writes in his Letter to the Galatians (6:9) “And in doing good, let us not fail. For in due time we shall reap, not failing.” So whether it is fighting against the pandemic or doing acts of charity, it is a kind of contagion of love and an opportunity for us live our  faith. As long as we are tireless and persevering, we will see our beautiful homeland once again.

Now, let us spread the message of love among our family and friends, and then to the whole society. Life influences life. Let us cherish the opportunity to do good together and to be a blessing to one another.

With blessings and prayers,

Cardinal John Tong Hon
