
MACAU (SE): The University of Saint Joseph [USJ] honoured John Cardinal Tong Hon, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, with an honorary Doctorate of Divinity, honoris causa, during its graduation ceremony held on December 7 at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima on the university’s Ilha Verde Campus.
Cardinal Tong was recognised for his lifelong dedication to building bridges of dialogue and harmony among diverse communities. Through his pastoral care and spiritual leadership, he has played a vital role in promoting mutual respect and understanding across cultures and faiths.
The event, officiated by Ao Ieong U, secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, welcomed distinguished guests, including Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang, bishop of Macau and chancellor of USJ, as well as representatives from the Central People’s Government Liaison Office, the Education and Youth Development Bureau, and others.
In addition to Cardinal Tong, the ceremony also honoured Anthony Kwok-ki Yeung with an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration, honoris causa, and the academic achievements of 106 postgraduate students from the university across various fields, including religious studies and philosophy, arts and humanities, business and law, education, health sciences, and data engineering and science.
Professor Stephen Morgan, rector of the university, addressed the graduates, emphasising its commitment to fostering human flourishing, highlighting its mission to promote intellectual and ethical support for the betterment of society.
