Farewell to Precious Blood sister

Farewell to Precious Blood sister

HONG KONG (SE): Precious Blood Sister May May Wong passed away on November 20 at the age of 71 at Princess Margaret Hospital, after 52 years in the consecrated life and serving in the field of education for more than four decades.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Father Luke Tsui Kam-yiu at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Shek Kip Mei at 9:30am on November 28, followed by the interment at the graveyard for the Sisters of the Precious Blood at St. Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery, Cheung Sha Wan.

Sister Wong, whose Christian name was Mary Mazzarello, joined the Precious Blood Sisters in 1968. After making her first vow in 1971, she was assigned to the education ministry. She worked in different Precious Blood schools including Pui Ling School, Fanling, Ka Ling School and Tack Ching Girl’s Secondary School, both in Sham Shui Po, as principal, supervisor or manager. She was the chairperson of the Sisters of the Precious Blood Education Committee from 2001 to 2015.

Sister Wong also served in many education organisations, such as the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools, Secondary School Places Allocation Committee of the Education Bureau, the Association of Hong Kong Chinese Middle Schools, Catholic Religious Schools Council, to name a few. She served as a resource person for the training of new principals at the Faculty of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Sister Wong was awarded the Medal of Honour as well as the title of Justice of the Peace from the Hong Kong government for her dedicated works of charity. According to the Precious Blood Sisters, Sister Wong suffered from a hereditary disease, which was a heavy cross she silently carried. Her deteriorating health, since half a year ago, did not hamper her determination to perform her duties in education and for her congregation.

She was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital on November 11 for dialysis and fell into a coma. Her condition remained unstable until she passed away on November 20. May her soul rest in peace.
