Praying the rosary helps us focus on God

Praying the rosary helps us focus on God

The St. Jude’s Parish in North Point organised their Living Rosary on October 15 with the theme “The Living Rosary: One Devotion, One Mission”.  The afternoon activity commenced with participants assembling in the parish hall, followed by an entrance procession to the church. Five members of the community were dressed as the Blessed Virgin Mary, each representing her different titles: Our Lady of the Bible; Our Lady of Fatima; Out Lady of Piat; Our Lady of Lourdes; Our Lady of Manaoag.

Other English communities from different parishes were invited to partake in the procession. Among those who attended were representatives from Saint Anne Catholic Church; Sacred Heart Canossian Church; Saint Mary’s Church; Alay Kapwa Group (Wah Yan College).

Invited speaker for the day was Sister Mary Cordero of Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows who spoke on the benefits of praying the rosary. She said the first benefit is to have the peace of mind. When we pray the rosary, we put ourselves and our intentions into God’s hands. We can let go of any worries we may have and we can choose to completely trust in God, knowing that he is listening to our prayers and that he wants the best for us and those we pray for.

Moreover, Sister Cordero said praying the rosary increases our love for Jesus. She said as we meditate on the events in the life of Jesus, then we come to see how precious we are in his eyes that he came to earth, suffer and die for us. When we accept the love of Jesus then we can respond with a deeper love for him.

She continued by saying that praying the rosary can unite us with the Chuch. We can show we are part of the universal Church when we pray the rosary for our Church, its priests and members, and our Pope. We unite ourselves to our fellow brothers and sisters in faith when we pray for these intentions.

Furthermore, Sister Cordero said we can accept Mary’s request when we pray the rosary for peace. The rosary can also help us understand the will of God in our lives. When we pray for a specific intention, we trust that God will guide and help us know what to do. Above all, praying the rosary helps us focus on God instead of ourselves.

Sister Cordero pointed out that there are several reasons why we need to pray the rosary daily. We need the rosary to fight daily temptation; to slow down and find calm; to live a life connected to Jesus; to remain connected to the loving care of Mother Mary; to pray for others in a strong, dedicated way; to bring about world peace; to help us pray when we do not know what to pray for or how to ask for.

After the talk, the recitation of the Glorious Mystery followed. Each mystery began with a prayer intention, meditation and after reciting the decade, a song in honour of Our Lady was sung while flowers were offered to her.  Finally, the Chaplet to Mary, Queen of the Apostles was recited at the end of the event.
