HONG KONG (SE): Sister Cynthia Chan Sum-yee, of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, passed away peacefully in the morning of October 25, at the Canossian Infirmary, Villa Bakhita, on Caine Road after over a year of courageously battling illness. She was 76-years-old.
Sister Chan studied Education in Hong Kong and England. Soon after, she was sent to teach at the Sacred Heart Canossian School, the Pui Tak Canossian College and the Sacred Heart Canossian College, Macau. She was headmistress of the St. Francis’ Canossian School and the Principal of Holy Family Canossian College.
At the Holy Family Canossian Convent, she was assigned as superior community, while also being the principal of the college. In 2006, she was appointed vice provincial of the Hong Kong and Macau Province, and from 2009 to 2015, was named provincial superior. When she had completed term she returned to St. Francis’ and served as superior of the community.
In August this year, her health deteriorated rather quickly, and she became steadily weaker. It became necessary for her to leave the community in August in order to be cared for the Canossian Infirmary. At 7.30am on October 25, God called her home.
Sister Chan was a simple and kind person. Her spirituality was one of self-sacrifice, but to others, she was always generous, warm and full of sisterly concern. She dedicated herself to education for many years and developed close relationships with students and teachers alike. She will be remembered with much gratitude and affection for her good examples of faithfulness and love for God and for His Blessed Mother, and her generous dedication to the formation and development of the many young people.
May her memory be an inspiration to all those who have known you these past many years.
The Canossian Sisters thank the readers, relatives and friends for their prayers for the repose of her soul. May she rest in peace!
