Cardinal Stephen encourages DSE students ahead of Results’ Day

HONG KONG (SE): With the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) examination results set to be released on July 16, Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., of Hong Kong, shared a video message of encouragement for students.

He emphasised the importance of viewing this moment as a stepping stone in their life journeys, encouraging them to embrace every experience and learn from the outcomes, whatever they may be.

In the message, recorded on July 4, Cardinal Stephen addressed the stress and anxiety many students may be experiencing as they await their results. He recounted the story of a man who became overwhelmed by life’s demands and was feeling deeply depressed and struggling to cope.

Seeking relief, the man consulted a wise friend who advised him to bring along a snail, attach a thread, and follow its slow pace.

As he engaged in this new pursuit, the man began to notice the vibrant world around him, such as the beautiful elements of nature he had previously overlooked in his rush.

The cardinal drew a parallel to the pressures students face: “When you’re always doing a lot of homework, assignments, examinations… you have no time to slow down.”

He acknowledged that receiving exam results can evoke a wide range of emotions—joy, disappointment, or even a sense of failure—but he reminded students that their worth is not defined by grades alone.

“Take a look around,” he said. “When you slow down, God sends you different angels in the form of flowers, bees, and butterflies… telling you: ‘I am with you. Not to worry’.”

The cardinal emphasised that life is a continuous journey filled with new opportunities and fresh beginnings. “You are just starting your life journey,” he affirmed. “Let that journey be a journey with God, and God will continue to bless you.”
