Finding peace amidst holiday joy

Finding peace amidst holiday joy

My students usually respond with a chuckle, “Holidays? We’ll worry about that later, Sir!” When I asked my 4th-grade class to write about their Christmas break, they poured their hearts out, writing non-stop about travel plans, amusement parks, family gatherings, exotic destinations, yummy food, and, of course—gifts! As I read their stories, I couldn’t help but smile, thinking, “Wow, their schedules are packed!”

While their enthusiasm is infectious, it raises a pivotal question: Isn’t it okay to just have fun and forget about responsibilities, work, and problems for a bit? Hold up! I’m not asking you to spend your entire break in a 24/7 Adoration room or attend daily Mass (although, wouldn’t that be nice?). No, this is a holiday, not a workday!

But let’s be real; it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. Some of you might already have a daily habit of reading Scripture, listening to a morning reflection, or attending weekly Mass. That’s awesome! For others, maybe it’s just a simple prayer, a moment of meditation, or repeating “Jesus” with each breath. You can even do that while riding a gondola at Ngong Ping 360 or inside the MTR.

The Holy Family reminds us to prioritise quiet moments with God. Mary and Joseph, though likely stressed, found peace standing beside the manger, with Jesus’ smile shining on them. This is what we need: a Silent Night, an O Holy Night, a moment of calm and brightness.

Let’s make the most of our holidays, plan effectively, and enjoy every moment. But don’t forget—Jesus is in our hearts! Make this Christmas break the best one yet, and remember to invite Jesus along for the ride.

Have you ever wondered why some holidays feel like a drag or end in conflict? Perhaps we’ve forgotten to make space for Jesus in our hearts. True joy, peace, and happiness come from him. Without him, how can we radiate those qualities?

Let’s take a moment to say, “Lord, stay with me, fill me with your peace, and let my life—and my holiday—shine with your love. You are the beauty of my life. Amen.”
