Salesian sister returns to the Father’s house

HONG KONG (SE): Sister Cecilia Yip Yuk-ching, of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians [Salesian Sisters], died peacefully at 5:15 on March 27 at The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Tai Sin Hospital. She was 91-years-old and had devoted 68 years to religious life.

Born in Macau on 11 December 1934 and baptised there on 7 December 1934, She made her first profession in Hong Kong on 5 August 1958 and her perpetual profession on 5 August 1964.

Sister Yip served in pastoral care at Mary Help of Christians Convent in Hong Kong from 1958. She continued her ministry with catechism classes and pastoral care at Auxilium in Macau in 1977 and later took charge of the nursery and catechism classes at St. Mazzarello Convent in Macau in 1978. In 1982, she became vicar and catechist at St. Mazzarello Convent in Hong Kong, and in 2005, vicar and Chinese documentation coordinator at Mary Help of Christians Convent in Hong Kong. 

In 2017, she moved to the Nursing Section at St Teresa’s Hospital.

Sister Yip was known for her strong faith, diligence, and prayerful life centred on the Eucharist and the Rosary. Despite limited formal education, she was intelligent, adaptable, and eager to learn, mastering skills such as Chinese computer typing and assisting with religious document translation. 

Her balanced, resilient, and optimistic nature brought peace and joy to her community, reflecting her deep commitment to serving God and young people.

A Passover Thanksgiving Mass and funeral rites for Sister Yip is scheduled for April 11, after which she will be buried at Cheung Sha Wan Cemetery in Kowloon
