(LiCAS News): The century-old Shenjiadou Catholic Church in the Diocese of Hangzhou, eastern China, reopened to worshippers in January following restoration after years of damage and the parish community’s temporary displacement.
According to Xinde News, more than 450 parishioners and guests attended the reopening celebration. Bishop Yang Yongqiang presided over the Mass, which was concelebrated by over ten diocesan priests.
Built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, Shenjiadou Catholic Church has stood for over a century and is considered one of the best-preserved historic churches in Huzhou and Zhejiang province.
The church blends Chinese and Western architectural styles, with grey brick walls, tiled roofs, and stone-carved window grilles, reflecting the development of the Catholic faith in the region.
In September 2025, supported by government departments, clergy at various levels, and parishioners, the church underwent comprehensive restoration. The project preserved its original appearance and enhanced safety for ongoing use.
In his homily, Bishop Yang reflected on the Shenjiadou parish’s faith journey, encouraging parishioners to cherish the restored church and live out their Christian witness.
Liturgical music for the celebration was provided by ensembles from Xiaoshan, Nanxun, and Shenjiadou Catholic Churches.
Over 100 musicians, dressed uniformly and playing various instruments, performed classical hymns and contemporary praise songs, creating a solemn yet festive atmosphere.
To ensure the celebration proceeded safely and smoothly, organisers arranged for professional medical personnel to be present throughout the event. A medical station, equipped with emergency supplies, was set up to provide particular support for elderly participants.
Officials from the Nanxun District Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau, Shuanglin Town, and Lianhuadou Village attended to observe proceedings, learn about the church’s daily management, and offer suggestions on post-reopening safety measures. Their presence helped ensure the event’s orderly conduct.
“Being able to take part in Mass in the restored church is deeply moving,” remarked one parishioner in his eighties. “I was baptised here as a child. Later, after the church was damaged, we could only gather in temporary venues. Seeing it restored to its original appearance today feels as if we have found the roots of our faith again.”
After Mass, participants gathered outside to take photographs and commemorate the historic occasion.
According to the report, the reopening of Shenjiadou Catholic Church is not only significant for the local Catholic community but also signifies the orderly reopening of religious venues and the harmonious development of religious life.
As the bells of the century-old church rang once more, they will continue to accompany the faith of local believers, standing as a living witness to both historical change and enduring faith.
