Can you speak boldly for Christ?

Can you speak boldly for Christ?

No matter where I go or what I do, God is with me. That is my experience. Things aren’t always magically wonderful, but it is in those times that I see how much strength he offers.

Faith is about our relationship with God. It is not about rules or the dogmatic doctrine to scare people away or about a vengeful God or anything like that. It is purely about God and his creation. It is about being alive inside when he comes into my life. It is about hope and love. It is about getting to know the Creator. It is about learning from him. It is about submitting to God, who sees all when you don’t. I always discuss this with someone I meet who is a non-Christian. Always talk about faith and how we walk in our journey to the Kingdom of God.

From my experience, it was a successful attempt. Speaking for Christ helped me be aware of the real needs of other people as well as ourselves. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can share what we have in mind and spread the words of Christ.

Speaking for Christ needs strong will and faith. We have a mission to share Jesus Christ in our church, so I was assigned to a newcomer in Hong Kong. I asked her about who Jesus is; then she said plainly, the Son of God. I started to share my faith and how it moved me to do greater things to help me survive. Sharing a life of faith is a great feeling and it gives hope to others. Yes, we all have different characters, but it’s just a matter of understanding, communication and respect so we can share all the strength of God within us.

It can be seen as a good thing to be bold and stand up for what you believe in. But boldness is also often equated with being pushy or over assertive. It is important to realise that boldness has adverse effects if it is used for self interests. As Christians, we will face circumstances that require us to be bold to stand for Christ. Being bold may be as simple as talking to someone you normally would not; or stepping out of your comfort zone by praying with a family member, friend or co-worker. True boldness is centred on Christ. It requires humility rather than pride as we realise that we cannot be bold on our own. When the Holy Spirit is inside us, we will understand what it means to be brave for Christ and bring honour to his name.

I can speak for my faith before a non-Christian because we are born again in Spirit as baptised Christians united in Christ. We pray for those who are poor in Spirit so that they too can experience the goodness and amazing grace of God alone.

I encountered many non-Christians who questioned my faith, but there are two persons I can’t forget. Both do not believe in Christ. I do not force anyone to accept my faith because we must respect each other’s religious beliefs. Being bold in my faith does not mean debating and fighting with others. Before we become bold and speak about our religious beliefs, it is essential that we are well-versed with our faith and prepared to answer questions that can be thrown at us. Many I have noticed are ashamed to pray in public or even before meals. They do not dare to make the Sign of the Cross before others. I should make the Sign of the Cross because it is one way to show that I am a Catholic.

A woman I met came from Mexico and did not believe in Jesus. In our conversation, I shared with her how the Lord helped me in my predicaments with a smile. Actions speak louder than words. I did not argue with her, but I only shared my ideas and listened to hers. That way, I gained her respect as well as friendship.

The other one is my online classmate from an English class. He comes from a Muslim country. We have something in common. We both like to talk about logic. He insisted that Muslim is the first religion and showed me many proofs. I know my faith, and I can stand for it, so I explained why Jesus is God for me. He insisted that Jesus was a prophet. When debates occur between two people of different perceptions, it sometimes ends with hours of heated arguments. So I just shared with him my belief. But I will never remain just quiet without sharing my side.
