Archbishop of Seoul prayers for victims of Itaewon tragedy

HONG KONG (SE): In a message released on November 2, Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick of Seoul, expressed his condolences and prayed for all the victims who died in the Halloween crowd crush on October 29 in the city’s Itaewon district.

Archbishop Chung expressed “sincere condolences to all the victims and prayed that the Lord’s grace and comfort be with those who are suffering from the sudden loss of loved ones and family members.” 

The archbishop also prayed for the “authorities involved in the accident and all those who are working on rescue operations at the scene.” 

Lastly he said that he hoped that “such a tragedy will not be repeated anymore.”

Meanwhile on October 31, religious leaders in South Korea paid tribute at an altar set up at the public plaza in front of Seoul City Hall in remembrance of those killed in the worst crowd crush in the country’s history. 

At the end of his Angelus on October 30, Pope Francis said, “We pray for those—especially young people—who died tonight in Seoul, from the tragic consequences of a sudden crowd crush” [Sunday Examiner, November 6].
