Whenever I feel spiritual dryness, all I have to do is grab my guitar and my praise and worship songbook. Before I start playing, I humbly say a little prayer to our God to still my troubled heart. Then I begin to play and sing. Afterwards, I find myself crying, thankful, and believing that his presence in my life is even greater and stronger.

As for me, if I feel spiritual dryness, I watch videos about the lives of the saints and listen to online spiritual talks by priests like Father Darwin Gitgano. I pray and meditate. I also spend time outdoors, admiring God’s creation in a quiet place, and I mingle with my churchmates, playing the guitar and singing religious songs. In this way, I feel recharged in my spiritual life.

When I feel spiritual dryness, I acknowledge these feelings and seek God through listening to praise and worship songs. I reflect on the lyrics and align my thoughts with God’s love. It can be difficult at times, but I endure it. There are moments when I speak my heart out by talking with him. I say my rosary because if I do not, I do not feel at peace.

Experiencing spiritual dryness is normal and is something that anyone can face, even the saints and blessed ones; I myself am not exempt from this. Whenever I feel apprehensive and overthink things that are impossible, my anxiety strikes. This kind of struggle is different from other medical illnesses. I do not feel physical pain, but I am emotionally and mentally overwhelmed by it. It can kill one’s inner self. During these times, I persevere in praying, asking God for healing, strength, guidance, protection, and his divine intervention. Another way to overcome this challenge is to pray the Holy Rosary. Not just reciting it, but praying with faith and hope, because our Blessed Mother is a powerful intercessor.

Experiencing spiritual dryness is very challenging. Whenever I go through this dryness, the first thing I do is sing more praise and worship songs. I then reflect on why I am feeling spiritually dry; I analyze myself and figure out the cause. I pray and talk to our Lord, asking him to strengthen me in my weaknesses and feeling sorry for what I have done. After that, I continue singing along with the praise songs being played. After all, singing is like praying twice.

Upon facing spiritual dryness, I learn to embrace the experience and keep praying. This may be God’s invitation to love him not just for the benefits he provides (CCC 2639), but for who he is. It leads me to deepen my faith and trust even in silence, while also strengthening my patience as I allow God’s timing to work in my heart. Such acceptance humbly encourages me to depend on God’s guidance, knowing that spiritual dryness is temporary. I learn to trust that God hears our prayers and will renew my spirit in his perfect time (Psalm 40:1-2).
