A message from the Catholic Church Lenten Campaign – 2nd Week of Lent–Rise and do not be afraid [Matthew  17:7]

In the gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent (Matthew 17:1–9), Jesus reveals his transfigured image to the disciples; his face shines like the sun.  However, when the disciples suddenly hear the voice of God, they are overwhelmed with fear.  Jesus approaches and comforts them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid”.

Facing the fears of reality

We are experiencing an era of profound confusion: while technological and economic advancements give us the illusion that we are masters of all, we are lost in alienation from human relationships, the depravity of human nature, and immense fear of war. Desperation, vulnerability, bewilderment, and despondency remind us that we are very much like the disciples—”very afraid”.

From “inheritors” to “messengers”

Jesus does not only say “do not be afraid”; He commands us to “Rise!”. To be “Messengers of Hope”, we must understand the true essence of being messengers: we can only pass on what we have first inherited. We cannot give others what we do not possess ourselves. Sharing hope in this challenging generation is not about mere optimism; it must be built upon a genuine, deep encounter with God. It is the experience of being “touched” by Jesus that grants us the courage and strength to walk with him.

Rise, and go

During this second week of Lent, let’s try:

  1. Open our hearts: In our prayers, allow Jesus to draw near and touch the most fearful and vulnerable aspects of our inner selves. Let his touch heal our wounds.
  2. Receive Hope: Reaffirm our “inheritance” from God—the assurance of Christ’s resurrection and the magnitude of God’s abundant love.
  3. Be a courageous messenger: Respond to Jesus’ invitation to “Rise.” Step out of our fear and comfort zone. Endeavour to bring the hope we have inherited from God to our family, our social circles, and to those brothers and sisters struggling in fear and unrest.

As we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Diocese, may we become true “Messengers of Hope” and ignite the glow of Christ in our neighbours in the midst of darkness.
