(SE): Patriarch Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem, and Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, commenced a pastoral visit to Gaza on June 22 aimed at healing the wounds of thousands of men, women, and children worn down by the atrocities of war, Vatican News reported on June 22.
They were joined by Josef Blotz, grand hospitaller of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, as well as representatives from Malteser International, the Order’s humanitarian organisation.
The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem stated that the visit demonstrates the Churches of Jerusalem’s commitment to supporting both local congregations and the wider community in Gaza, many of whom are still facing severe humanitarian challenges, anxiety, loss, and instability.
The statement continued, “The presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III and His Beatitude Cardinal Pizzaballa carries the prayer of Jerusalem to Gaza’s wounded faithful and to all who suffer, in a ministry of consolation, mercy and steadfast Christian witness rooted in the gospel and in the sacred vocation of the Holy City.”
The official schedule indicates that the cardinal and the patriarch will hold meetings with clergy, religious orders, local Christian families, and individuals affected by the continuing humanitarian emergency, Vatican News reported. Their visit is intended to offer spiritual encouragement, solace, and a sense of hope through prayer and pastoral care.
After an opening welcome and prayer led by Father Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of the Holy Family Church, Cardinal Pizzaballa conveyed his happiness at having the opportunity to meet both parishioners, those living near the church, and the broader community of Gaza.
The cardinal acknowledged the ongoing difficulties but stressed that the presence of Church leaders is a sign of the Churches’ ongoing commitment and concern for Gaza, which remains at the forefront of their priorities.
