HONG KONG (SE): Bible knowledge became the stuff of friendly rivalry at Holy Family Church on August 23, as eight parishes sent their sharpest teams to battle it out in the Divine Word Society’s [SVD] first-ever Chinese-language gospel quiz, with Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing cheering them on as guest of honour.
The event drew 24 parish representatives and an audience of around 120 supporters. Organisers created the contest to inspire parishioners to study the scriptures, follow Jesus and share the gospel in their daily lives.
Focused entirely on the Gospel of Mark, the competition featured four lively rounds, along with an online question-and-answer session during the break that allowed members of the audience to take part.
St. Benedict’s Church took first place after a close contest, with St. Edward’s Church placing second and St. Thomas the Apostle Church coming third. Prizes were also awarded to the winners of the society’s previous online quiz.
In his closing address, Bishop Ha praised the participants for their enthusiasm and urged them to keep growing in their faith through the scriptures.
Father Johnson Dhos svd, parish priest of Holy Family Church, thanked the teams for their hard work and confirmed that the Divine Word Society will host its second competition next year, focusing on the Gospel of John.
Father Manoj Mullackal svd, speaking for the organising committee, extended his gratitude to Bishop Ha and the participating parishes for making the event a success.
Other members of the organising team included Father Thomas Nguyen Le Anh Son svd, Father Joseph Huang svd, Father Kevin Dao Duy Thien svd, Marie Chan, Timothy Pang, Joshua Au Yeung, Veronica Fung and Margaret Ma.
