The Refugee Services Group of Society of St. Vincent de Paul Hong Kong Council [SSVP-HK] launched in May a structured, 14-session “Adult Computer Class” to empower adult asylum seekers and refugees with practical computer knowledge, covering both hardware and software skills through hands-on learning. The successful programme concluded with a graduation ceremony on October 3, where nine participants were awarded certificates of completion and presented with refurbished notebook computers as souvenirs.
The celebration was attended by participants’ families, group members, and the members of the Pastoral Care for Displaced People (PCDP), including Sister Victoria Victorino, Father Natalius Suryanto, Sister Sandra Covini, and Sister Corazon Demetillo.
During the ceremony, graduates shared personal reflections on how the class impacted their lives. One participant expressed heartfelt gratitude for SSVP -HK’s ongoing support for her family and children, becoming emotional as she described how learning to use a computer fulfilled an opportunity she never thought possible. Another graduate shared that her newly acquired skills now enable her to teach digital skills to her own children, while a third participant proudly noted that the experience boosted her confidence to demonstrate her technical abilities to others.
The course was made possible through dedicated volunteers, including university computer department staff who developed the curriculum in just two days, alongside SSVP-HK members who served as tutors and helpers. To meet ongoing demand, SSVP-HK plans to organise another computer class around January or February 2027 in collaboration with PCDP. The next cohort aims to expand enrollment to 15 to 20 participants from across PCDP teams, with organisers currently securing a larger venue and additional teaching staff to support the larger group.
