HONG KONG (SE): Caritas-Hong Kong successfully hosted the “Step for Love – 2025 Caritas Charity Walk” on March 29 at the Sha Tin Racecourse, drawing over 3,700 enthusiastic participants. The event, returning to the racecourse after eight years, provided a scenic five-kilometre route through the heart of Sha Tin, uniting staff, service beneficiaries, and community members in a spirit of charity and solidarity.
The walkathon commenced with an opening ceremony officiated by Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., bishop of Hong Kong, alongside distinguished guests including Jimmy Jim Wai-ki, chairperson of the Caritas Fundraising Committee and senior business director of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China [Asia]; Justin Lai, vice-chairperson of Friends of Caritas; a representative of TL3 Limited; Father Joseph Yim Tak-lung, chief executive of Caritas-Hong Kong; deputy chief executive, Father Peter Lo; and Father Dominique Mukonda Kananga, cicm.
In his welcome address, Father Yim expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for once again providing the venue. He highlighted Caritas’ 70-year legacy of service and the crucial role of donors, staff, service users, and the wider community in supporting vulnerable groups and spreading love and hope. He also thanked the organising committee for their dedication and noted that the pleasant weather would make the event all the more enjoyable for participants.
As a token of appreciation, Cardinal Stephen, together with c Lo and Father Mukonda, presented commemorative gifts to sponsors who generously contributed to the event’s success.
The day was filled with vibrant performances, including singing, beatboxing, and a sign language presentation. A standout moment was a lively towel exercise led by Caritas staff and service users, setting an energetic tone before participants embarked on the walk.
The walkathon officially began as representatives from Caritas and its sponsors fired the starter pistol, launching participants on their route through some of Sha Tin’s most picturesque locations, including Sha Tin Racecourse, Penfold Park, Banyan Bridge, and Shing Mun River, before concluding at Twin Bridge.
During the event, designated photo spots and capsule toy games added an element of fun, ensuring participants took home joyful memories.
The “Step for Love” walkathon was more than just a charity event—it was a testament to the enduring spirit of Caritas and its mission to bring hope and support to those in need.
