Long serving Canossian sister returns to the Father

HONG KONG (SE): Sister Cecilia Chang of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, peacefully returned to the Lord on June 10, at Villa Bakhita Convent, at the age of 89.

Born on July 24, 1935, in Guangdong Province, China, Sister Chang joined the Canossian Sisters on 1 August 1953. She made her first vows on 24 December 1956, and her perpetual profession on 5 January 1962. Renowned for her candid and cheerful spirit, unwavering faith in the Lord, and deep love for others, she dedicated her life to education and evangelisation.

Following her first vows, she was assigned to various schools where she held both teaching and leadership roles, these included St. Mary’s Canossian School, Holy Family Canossian School, Sacred Heart Canossian College [Chinese Section], Sacred Heart Canossian School [Afternoon Section], Pui Tak Canossian Primary School, and Sacred Heart Canossian Commercial School.

Her passion for education was evident as she poured her heart into guiding and nurturing her students. More importantly, she prioritised the salvation of souls, dedicating her time outside of school to catechesis and helping others come to know and love God.

Even in retirement, Sister Chang remained tireless in service, continuing as a catechist in the parish and assisting catechumens in their spiritual journeys. She was also invited to St. Margaret’s Co-educational English Secondary and Primary School to engage in evangelisation efforts. Her words and actions had a lasting impact on countless students.

In 2012, due to her advancing age and health concerns, Sister Chang retired to Bakhita Convent, where she devoted her time to prayer and sacrifices for the Lord and others. Those who were privileged to know her, including sisters, colleagues, coworkers, and students, held her in deep affection, forever remembering her joyful smile, generous spirit, and fervent commitment to missionary work.

Father Xavier Wong celebrated the funeral Mass for Sister Chang on June 16, with Father Gregoire Vignola concelebeating. Her remains were laid to rest later that day at the Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley.

The Canossian Sisters and the family of Sister Chang’s extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their love and respect. They request continued prayers for her, that she may soon enter the Kingdom of Heaven and experience eternal life.
