HONG KONG (SE): Every fourth Sunday of September is designated Education Day by the Diocese of Hong Kong. On September 28, the eight affiliated schools of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception—including Sacred Heart Canossian Kindergarten, Sacred Heart Canossian School, Sacred Heart Canossian School Private Section, Central and Western District St Anthony’s School, Catholic Mission School, Raimondi College Kindergarten Section, Raimondi College Primary Section, and Raimondi College—gathered at the cathedral to participate in Mass. This year’s theme was “Your Word Is My Comfort” taken from Psalm 119:49-50.

In his homily, Father Dominic Chan Chi-ming, parish priest of the cathedral, reminded everyone that God is the best listener and most reliable companion. If we trust in God, he will grant us the courage to live authentically.

He emphasised that every Christian is a messenger of the gospel and encouraged teachers to embrace their mission of spreading the gospel in their professional roles, providing comfort and hope to students.

Citing the gospel reading, Father Chan explained that Jesus calls his disciples to understand that the world’s wealth is meant for everyone. When the wealthy share with the poor, all can access life’s necessities—this is good news.

The Lord’s word is our comfort, and if we humbly allow it into our lives, we can all become disciples of Jesus. We should also strive to be teachers for all, fostering mutual growth through education.

Joseph Kung Kwong-pui, the episcopal delegate for Education, urged everyone to pay greater attention to students’ mental health. Catholic schools play a prophetic role, and teachers should help students understand that life’s purpose and meaning lie in sharing their wealth and talents with others.

In the supportive environment of Catholic schools, students can grow, find meaning in life, and allow their mental health to thrive.

Finally, Lam Ngan Yin, principal of Raimondi College Primary Section, led educators, parents, students, and the congregation in reciting a pledge to commit to practising Catholic values in their respective roles.
