Hope as our breath of life

Hope as our breath of life
John Poon

The Advent gathering of the Hong Kong chapter of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service [CHARIS] took place on November 30 at Caritas Hall, Caine Road, centred on the theme “Hope: Our Breath of Life.” Guest speaker John Poon, a retired psychologist from Australia, addressed misconceptions about Christian hope and its application in daily life, particularly for those in Charismatic renewal. This gathering reflects the ongoing commitment to fostering hope and community within the Charismatic renewal in Hong Kong.

The event began with reverent praise and worship led by the Sowers Charismatic Community. Poon emphasised the importance of discernment and seeking God’s guidance, highlighting hope’s connection to patience—a grace from the Holy Spirit. He affirmed that while people often ask God to meet their needs, active involvement in their lives and communication through prayer is what God desires.

Poon also discussed love as a source of inspiration, urging humility and confidence as foundational elements. He encouraged attendees to love themselves and others consistently.

Following Poon’s address, Divine Word Father Jay Flandez, led a Eucharistic celebration, with Father Lawrence Lee Len concelebrating. After Mass, a turnover ceremony introduced the new moderator, Jan Gube, who succeeded Maria Raichandani. Father Flandez and Father Lee blessed both the outgoing and incoming moderators.

Maria Raichandani has been active in the Hong Kong Charismatic renewal since the late 1970s, serving as chairperson in the 1990s. Jan Gube, familiar with the movement from a young age, has participated in various Charismatic activities and holds an academic position while being a devoted family man. SE
