HONG KONG (SE): Caritas-Hong Kong welcomed the Lunar New Year with its annual spring reception on February 22, bringing together nearly 300 benefactors, donors, school and parish representatives, and community partners at Caritas House, on Caine Road.

Presiding officer of the Caritas Council, Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., extended warm festive greetings to those present. He was later joined by Father Joseph Yim Tak-lung, chief executive of Caritas, and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing, chairman of the council, to lead a celebratory toast.

Addressing the gathering, Cardinal Stephen reflected on the symbolism of the Year of the Horse, drawing parallels between its qualities—vitality, courage and perseverance—and the mission of Caritas. He said the organisation remains steadfast and forward-looking amid challenges, continuing its commitment to serve the most vulnerable members of society.

Expressing gratitude to supporters, he underscored the importance of unity in sustaining the work of Caritas. Beyond providing material assistance, he emphasised the deeper mission of offering hope. “We support and accompany people in need—whether the elderly, families, young people or children—walking alongside them with courage and strength,” he said.

Cardinal Stephen added that Caritas seeks to care for people “from womb to tomb,” ensuring that even those on the margins are not forgotten. This shared commitment, he noted, continues to inspire the organisation to bring the love of Christ to every corner of society. “Like a determined horse, we move forward with courage as messengers of hope,” he said.

The reception opened with a lively performance by students of Caritas Ling Yuet Sin Kindergarten, followed by a Chinese dance titled “Festive Red Scarf” performed by the dance group of Caritas Ma On Shan Secondary School, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere.

A “Caritas Hope Tree” was also set up at the venue, inviting guests to write blessings and prayers for their families, friends and the wider community on paper leaves—symbolising how love and hope continue to take root and flourish within society.
