Twelve visitors from Hong Kong’s German-speaking Catholic Congregation journeyed to Yim Tin Tsai on September 20 for their annual pilgrimage.
The day began with a Mass at the St. Joseph Chapel on the island to mark the feast day of Saint Hildegard of Bingen, the patron saint of the community, which falls on September 17. The Mass was celebrated by its spiritual advisor Father Franz Gassner svd.
The group then set out together to explore the historic Hakka village and its scenic trails, visiting key landmarks, including the former home of Saint Joseph Freinademetz svd and the restored salt pans, where they had the rare opportunity to taste locally harvested salt.

Council member Tobi Döringer expressed how much he enjoyed delving into the storied history of the spiritual island, noting that the group was filled with awe upon visiting the humble former home of Saint Joseph Freinademetz and delighted to taste the island’s locally produced salt.
Stephanie Hung from the Lutheran Church added that it was exhilarating to discover a previously unknown part of Hong Kong’s culture and history, admitting a unique sense of pride in the local salt production. Excited to have found a local pilgrimage spot, she noted how she enjoyed the island’s peace and quiet while walking across it, and shared her plans to return for quiet meditation in the future.
