MANILA (SE): The Manila Cathedral is set to reenact the pontifical coronation of Our Lady of Antipolo on November 28, commemorating the centenary of the Marian image’s crowning in 1926, according to CBCP News.
The reenactment will take place during a Mass, which will be presided over by Jose Cardinal Advincula of Manila.
The three-day celebration will commence on November 26 with a welcome Mass for the arrival of the image, presided over by Bishop Ruperto Santos of Antipolo. A Marian concert is scheduled to follow the Mass.
On November 27, Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David of Kalookan will preside over a Mass at 12:10pm for schools affiliated with the Manila Ecclesiastical Province School Systems Association.
At 5:00pm, Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, will preside over another Mass, followed by a procession of the image around Intramuros.
“Let us come together to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary under her beloved title of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, giving thanks for four centuries of faith and devotion and celebrating a hundred years since her canonical coronation,” the Manila Cathedral said in a social media post.
“May Our Lady continue to guide us on our journey of faith and intercede for the peace and protection of our families and our nation,” the post added.
The image arrived in the Philippines from Acapulco, Mexico, in 1626 aboard a galleon. Its safe voyage across the Pacific is associated with its title, Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.
Pope Pius XI authorised the image’s canonical coronation in a decree issued in 1925. The coronation was held on 28 November 1926 at Luneta in Manila, with then-Manila Archbishop Michael James O’Doherty presiding.
