MANILA (SE): “Energy policy must not sacrifice the poor and the planet for the illusion of immediate relief,” said Bishop Gerardo Alminaza of San Carlos, president of Caritas Philippines, responding to recent Senate proposals, CBCP News reported on April 17.

Bishop Alminaza warned that lifting the coal moratorium, imposed in 2020, risks more fossil fuel dependence and lasting harm.

He said coal dependence exposes the country to global price shocks, especially during conflicts.

Caritas reported that communities near coal plants already face pollution, health risks, and displacement.

“We call on the government to reject any expansion of coal dependence, even as a temporary measure,” it said, urging a shift to renewables like solar, wind, geothermal, and marine.

Caritas urged authorities to accelerate the transition toward renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, and marine technologies.

“Investing in these resources will stabilise our energy security, protect our communities, and decouple our economy from volatile global markets shaped by war,” Bishop Alminaza added.

The group stressed the need for plans to protect workers and communities affected by energy changes, CBCP News reported.

It also called for accountability for environmental damage and stronger protections for communities burdened by coal projects.
