(OSV News): The Vatican will host a global meeting this autumn with Eastern Catholic leaders and bishops’ conference presidents to mark the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis’s key document on family life.
The October 7-14 gathering aims “to proceed, in mutual listening, to a synodal discernment on the steps to be taken in order to proclaim the gospel to families today,” considering both Amoris Laetitia and current local Church initiatives.
Participants will explore how families contribute to the Church’s mission as both recipients and active agents of evangelisation. The framework calls families to embody the gospel in “daily relationships, choices, fragility and hope,” and urges openness to renewal and perseverance.
The agenda includes listening sessions, sharing experiences, and expert dialogue. The goal is to discern “the direction in which the Holy Spirit is leading us today,” with five daily themes guiding discussion.
Families today: reality, beauty and challenges
Day one addresses the realities, challenges, and beauty of family life today.
Challenges include economic insecurity, illness, raising children, loneliness, and caring for vulnerable relatives.
Participants will consider how modern changes affect love, family, care, faith transmission, and the Church’s mission.
Spouses know well that one never ceases to learn the languages of love, day after day
Young people and the discovery of the vocation to marriage
Day two focuses on young people, their attitudes towards marriage, and how the Church can support them.
The Vatican notes that confidence in marriage and family life has weakened for many young people due to economic and social pressures.
The meeting will explore how families and communities can encourage young people to value marriage and healthy relationships.
Married life. The first years of marriage: a decisive time
Day three discusses supporting couples, especially in the early years of marriage, a decisive period for building strong foundations.
The Vatican emphasises the importance of nurturing couples during these early years, as this shapes their ability to face future challenges.
Discussion will consider the most effective ways to accompany and nurture couples as they begin family life.

In the difficulties of life: accompanying and supporting
Day four addresses how the Church can accompany families facing complex or difficult circumstances.
The Church calls for particular attention to those experiencing relational, social, or spiritual difficulties.
The Vatican highlights that even in struggle and failure, God’s grace can work through patience and hope.
Questions include how the Church can better support those in difficulty and overcome resistance.
The discussion considers how Christian communities can ensure people experiencing suffering or separation feel supported and included.
Christian families as subjects of the Church’s mission
The final day considers how families can become active participants in the Church’s mission.
The Vatican notes, “Spouses know well that one never ceases to learn the languages of love, day after day.”
Despite today’s fast pace, families remain the primary setting for passing on the faith and for personal and spiritual growth. The meeting will consider how to recognise and support this vital role.`
